You Never Know by Mary Calmes

June 24, 2017

Hagen Wylie has it all figured out. He’s going to live in his hometown, be everybody’s friend, explore new relationships, and rebuild his life after the horrors of war. No muss, no fuss is the plan. He’s well on his way—until he finds out his first love has come home too. Hagen says it’s no big deal, but a chance encounter with Mitch Thayer’s two cute sons puts him directly in the path of the only guy he’s never gotten out of his head.

Mitch returned for three reasons: to raise his sons where he grew up, to move his furniture business and encourage it to thrive, and to win Hagen back. Years away made it perfectly clear the young man he loved in high school is the only one for him. The problem? He left town and they have not talked since.

If Hagen’s going to trust him again, Mitch needs to show him how he’s grown up and isn’t going to let go. They could have a new chance at love… but Hagen is insistent he’s not reviving a relationship with Mitch. Then again, you never know.

Review word and pen

Have you ever made a decision in your life, and wondered if it was the right one? Whether the path you’re on is the one you are meant to walk? That’s what Hagen Wylie is doing. Well, maybe it’s best if I start from the beginning.

Mitch Thayer pissed me off, big time. He made grand declarations to Hagen. Made him believe his future was stretched out before him, then, in the blink of an eye and a few careless words, he took that all away. Hagen, unsure of what the future would hold for him, decided to take a different path and went into the military, where he found out there were worse things than breaking up with someone. Much, much worse. But he still made it home, mostly intact. And once he did, he began to forge a new life for himself. Or at least he’s trying. Things seem to be going his way. He’s got a friend with benefits in Ash, who is rich and on the cusp of greatness. He’s well liked and respected in his hometown. He has friends, he has a family. What more could he want?

When the word comes around that Mitch Thayer is back in town, Hagen reacts with surprising indifference. It took me time to figure it out, because his whole world had revolved around Mitch. Then, slowly, I came to understand that Hagen had built his own life his own way. And he was living it by his own rules. And I respected that. And that feeling that Hagen had grown strong was reinforced when things in his life began to change faster than he’d expected. Not the least of which is when he saves a life. That one selfless act has dramatic repercussions when it brings Mitch back into Hagen’s life.

Now I’m going to stop talking about the book there, because anything else I say would be spoilers, and I won’t do that… Even if I’m dying to gossip about the book! I will say that Hagen touched my heart. And this book had me reaching for tissues three times. (Shut up, I was not crying! Much.) Mary Calmes took these events and wove them together into another great story.

Will Hagen find his happy every after? If he does, will it be with the man who used to want him, or the one that now says he does? That’s the thing about the roads you’re going to be on in life. You Never Know where they’re going to lead you.
